Shakespeare Schools Festival Cast Workshop Review
On Thursday 29th September, 25 cast members and 2 student directors across years 8, 9 and 10 travelled to Camden for the Shakespeare Schools Festival cast workshop. We met some students from Burlington Danes who are rehearsing for their version of The Taming of the Shrew.
We began the workshop with some warm-up activities and the facilitators talked about the idea of ‘readiness’; being both physically and mentally ready for performance. We explored practical ways to achieve this. We also experimented with voice and movement exercises to develop our characterisation.
In the latter half of the session we were given an opportunity to share a scene from our play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Although a nerve-wracking experience (as we only staged the selected scene the night before!), we found it a really valuable experience and were given some useful feedback. In turn we watched a scene from A Taming of the Shrew and gave the actors some notes on how successfully the characters were communicated, how well the students brought the world of the play to life and the clarity of the language.
All in all, a great day and worthwhile process- we have some exciting new ideas!
