At Isaac Newton Academy, we believe that there is a unique opportunity to ensure Science is taught correctly from the beginning. It is our aim to ensure that the scientific knowledge and understanding required at A-level has its roots in the material taught right from the beginning of the student’s secondary school experience. By embracing the concept of depth before breadth and teaching extended Science topics, we hope to provide every student with the foundations for success in science during and beyond secondary school. 

In order to instil a desire for learning and a life-long love of the subject, we strive to ensure that science is taught in a practical and hands on manner. We take every opportunity to inspire and engage, giving the students opportunities to plan and test their own ideas through extended investigations.  In addition, where possible, we choose to use topical examples and current issues facing Scientists around the world to ensure our students develop the critical thinking skills that underpin the very nature of Science and Scientific enquiry.

AAll of our topics cover the material found in the national curriculum and in many cases extend beyond this, introducing some key GCSE level concepts at a natural point where they link with those at Key Stage 3. Each topic has an end of unit assessment which is sat at the end of the term.

Science Y8 Overview

In Year 9, students study two Key Stage 3 topics and begin their AQA GCSE Science in January. They study the following topics:
  • Inheritance and Disease
  • Forensic Science
  • Physics Fundamentals (KS4)
  • Biology Fundamentals (KS4)
  • Chemistry Fundamentals (KS4)

Science Y9 Overview

Year 10 follow the AQA GCSE 1-9 course in either individual sciences in Biology, Chemistry & Physics or Combined Science: Trilogy depending on their option choice in Year 9.

Year 11 students are following the EDEXCEL GCSE course in either Individual Sciences in Biology, Chemistry & Physics or in Double Award Science (which consists of a GCSE in Core Science and Additional Science).

These topics are supplemented by a variety of science enrichment activities. We run a popular Science Club all year round, give students a first taste of Zoology with our department pets, and enjoy using the roof terrace for Astronomy club during the dark winter evenings.
