Key Stage 3 Skills for life Curriculum

At Isaac Newton Academy our aim is to equip every student with the knowledge, learning power and character necessary for success at university and beyond. Our Skills for Life curriculum for Key Stage 3 students is intended to support this aim by teaching students transferable practical skills and knowledge that will lead to greater independence and confidence, both at school and in life beyond school.

All Key Stage 3 students have a weekly one hour lesson.  During the course of the year, students are taught a range of modules encompassing some of the following topics:

  • Art and textiles
  • Craftsmanship
  • Study skills
  • Survival skills
  • Financial management
  • Revision, essay writing, research skills, critical thinking
  • Mental health/strength – how to manage/avoid stress, anxiety, depression
  • Local community projects
  • Cookery skills and healthy diet
  • ICT skills
  • Conservation
  • First aid & life-saving skills
  • Philosophy/ethics
  • DIY skills
  • Confidence-building/Self-presentation
  • Making expert presentations & using PowerPoint effectively

Lessons are enquiry-based and practical in nature.  We intend to document and celebrate the outcomes of course through the website and an end of year exhibition.
