Jack Petchey's Speak Out Challenge

Thursday 17 March 2022

With the return of the Jack Petchey's “Speak Out” Challenge this year, Isaac Newton Academy had the fortunate opportunity to have the whole Year 10 cohort participating in a workshop funded by the Jack Petchey charity organisation. This was an exciting opportunity for our Year 10 students to develop their public speaking skills, although, with the whole year group competing, it made the challenge of finding the winner to represent our academy testing for both the students and for the judges!

The journey began on Wednesday 19th January, when our students engaged in a workshop designed and delivered by the Speakers Trust and supported and funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation. Throughout the day, students spent their time learning the skills and techniques for required for great public speaking before putting them into practice. The 180 students only had a short period of time to prepare their speech, before it was judged at the end of the day to select just 15 students to deliver their speeches in the assembly final. Their eclectic range of topics were delivered at an incredible standard, leaving the organisers, teachers and their peers in awe of their engagement with their personal stories and willingness to share a part of their identity with the audience.

The 15 students who were chosen for the Assembly Final had only two weeks to prepare for the assembly and took time out of their half-term holiday and school day to develop their speeches. Their confidence soared in the assembly and it was evident how hard they had worked to make sure their speeches were perfect; the judges were thoroughly impressed. The 15 finalists were: Sandeep, Jaspreet, Jasmeet, Aisha, Chanel, Alex, Zaina, Faiza, Sadia, Anurag, Amandeep, Cosmina, Aminah, Ghazia and Moumita. After an intense deliberation, the decision was finally made, and our Jack Petchey runner up was: Aminah. Our Jack Petchey School Finalist is Alex!

Alex will be representing our school on Tuesday 22nd March 2022 in the Regional final held at Chadwell Heath Academy from 6:30pm. We wish our finalist the very best.
