Paul Drechsler CBE officially opens Isaac Newton Academy’s Sixth Form

On Monday 18th September, Isaac Newton Academy Sixth Form was officially opened with a formal ceremony. The Sixth Form offers a variety of academic subjects and a vocational BTEC for students aged 16-18 and already has over 100 students enrolled in Year 12.

The Sixth Form opening follows the hugely successful first set of GCSE results from Isaac Newton Academy in August, which saw 85% of pupils achieving the new benchmark score of grade 4 or better in English and Maths GCSEs (equivalent to a C).

The Sixth Form was officially opened by Paul Drechsler CBE. Paul Drechsler is Chair of the Board of Trustees at Teach First and President of the CBI. In February 2015, he was honoured by Her Majesty, The Queen with an Honorary CBE for services to the construction industry.

Paul Drechsler said at the event “It was such a fantastic day. What a wonderful opportunity it is to open a new Sixth Form. I met with some students this morning and each and every one of them was inspirational. It is the best start to the week I have had in a long time, and I have every confidence that the students are going to do brilliantly. I was reading the newspaper at the end of August and I read about INA’s fantastic GCSE results and the progress that the school has made and then I read about one of your students, Halema, being the best performing student in the Ark schools network – what a fantastic set of achievements. And it is only possible because of the brilliant leadership in the school and brilliant teachers.”

The ceremony began with an opening speech from Rachel Macfarlane, Principal at Isaac Newton Academy. Other guest speakers included Lucy Heller, CEO of Ark, and some current INA Sixth Form students.

The Mayor of Redbridge, Councillor Linda Huggett, attended the event and said “Redbridge always prides itself on its education and we have residents move to the area especially for that. Isaac Newton Academy has got excellent results and it has been a pleasure attending the Sixth Form opening ceremony. This is an exciting challenge for new students, and it is an opportunity for their growth and development. It is obvious from what I have seen today that they are going to be inspired by, and gain confidence from, their excellent teachers and I wish them every success in the future.”

Sugra Alibhai, Vice Principal and Head of Sixth Form thanked Paul and said: “This is an exciting start to what I know will be an interesting and challenging chapter for us all. It has been such a joy to see our internal students take their first steps as INA Sixth Form members and we have enrolled a wonderful group of external students who have brought a dynamic and new set of experiences in joining our school community. I look forward to us all learning and growing together.”

Isaac Newton Academy’s secondary school opened with just 180 Year 7 students in September 2012. Each year it has welcome another cohort of pupils and will continue to do so until it has 1250 11-18 year olds in 2018. It has a purpose-built building and was rated "Outstanding" by Ofsted in 2014 - just two years after opening. In September 2014, Isaac Newton Academy opened a primary phase right next to the secondary academy. INA Primary is a 3 form entry primary school, with 90 children in each year group. Like the secondary school, it will grow a year group at a time.

At Isaac Newton Academy our aim is to equip every student with the knowledge, learning power and character necessary for success at university and beyond. We believe that all INA students have the possibility to achieve outstanding educational outcomes, and are committed to supporting students in reaching their full potential.
