On Monday, 3rd March, Year 8 students attended an engaging AI live lesson, exploring how artificial intelligence is being used to tackle environmental challenges. They discovered how AI allows computers to perform tasks like humans and plays a crucial role in sustainability, from monitoring deforestation with satellites to reducing food waste in supermarkets and restaurants.
One key topic was deforestation, where AI-powered satellite images help detect illegal tree-cutting, enabling quicker responses to protect forests. Students also explored how AI helps manage food waste, with smart scales and cameras tracking discarded food to reduce unnecessary waste. Another exciting topic was coral reef conservation, where AI-powered cameras analyse marine life, helping scientists monitor and protect endangered reefs.
A particularly interesting career students learned about was that of a Computer Vision Specialist, who creates AI programs to analyse images and detect environmental changes. This technology helps in spotting deforestation, tracking pollution levels, and even monitoring the health of coral reefs.
Students were inspired by the real-world applications of AI and the careers involved, such as machine learning engineers, environmental analysts, and robotics specialists. Many left feeling excited about how AI can make a positive impact on the planet, with some considering careers in AI and sustainability.
It was an eye-opening session, leaving students with a deeper understanding of how technology can solve global issues and protect the environment for future generations
