Reading

The aim of our approach to reading at Isaac Newton Academy is to ensure that all of our students are able to read at an age-appropriate level or higher.

We work to achieve this by:

  1. Putting real thought into reading as part of our curriculum design. All subjects include challenging and engaging texts which provide opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of the subject while pushing themselves as a reader.
  2. Focusing on quality first teaching in all of our lessons. Teachers support our students to access texts in their subject and outside it by explicitly teaching new vocabulary, providing opportunities for students to read aloud and using our signature strategy of Inside, Outside, Beyond for decoding unfamiliar words.
  3. Supporting students who are not yet reading at an age appropriate level with the right one-to-one and small group interventions to catch them up.

We know the crucial importance of reading in helping our students to access their subjects. Our approach to reading is designed to support students’ progress across the curriculum and, outside the classroom, to cultivate students who are confident interpreters and communicators in the modern world.
