Amazing Animals

Continuous and enhanced provision is provided across the whole of the Reception year.  Specifically, the foundations of Design and Technology are linked to the following areas of learning: 

Expressive Arts and Design ELG: Creating with Materials Children at the expected level of development will: - Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function; - Share their creations, explaining the process they have used; - Make use of props and materials when role playing characters in narratives and stories. 

ELG: Fine Motor Skills:

  • Use a range of small tools, including scissors, paint brushes and cutlery;
  • Begin to show accuracy and care when drawing.

The Magic Toymaker (Project 1 and 2)

Project 1: Design, make and evaluate a hand puppet (using felt, needles and thread)

Project 2: Design, make and evaluate a lever puppet (using card, rods/lolly sticks and split pins)

Project 3: Design, make and evaluate a vehicle that will move on wheels (using junk modelling, papier mache, paint, axels and wheels)

Project 1: Design and make a functional pulley system to represent how the Ancient Egyptians moved the heavy stone to build the pyramids.

Project 2: Plan, design and cook a healthy meal for a group of people for a specific purpose [Project could be baking bread, then making it into bruschetta using seasonal, healthy toppings].

  • How are calligrams used in the world of design?
  • How do I describe the actions of levers as force multipliers?

Y8 enrichment day – Food Technology (Baking)

  • What is a logo and how are they used by people, brands, and companies?
  • What is the link between calligrams and logos?
  • How can I design my own font calligrams effectively?
  • How can I design my calligram as a logo?
  • How are cookies baked and what are the process involved in this, e.g.  safety, ingredients, timings, presentation/ decoration etc.
  • What is food packaging, target audience and how do I successfully design and create packaging for cookies?
  • What is a ‘calorie’ is and what is the amount of energy required to burn a calorie in foods and how links between it to nutrition and health?

Enrichment Clubs
  • Computing and Coding Club - To explore the use of raspberry pi’s and Arduino’s, how to create publishing contents such as podcast and digital media
  • Canteen carousel cooking event – To learn about the source of different ingredients in modern day cooking, how to select appropriate healthy ingredients for various dishes and make a of dishes that offer a varied healthy diet
  • Site team (everyday skills) club – To learn how to handle and use different tools for everyday building and maintenance, e.g. hammer, nails etc.
  • Creative Design club: Explore different techniques of weaving, stitching, collaging, and bleaching different types of fabrics to create textile-based artworks and products
